PENN Galleries
Did you recognize the outside of the building we shared back in April?
Well here is a sneak peak inside!
We recently completed work on the Penn Museum - Middle East Galleries. This area was designed as a white box rather than a traditional black box display. The gallery design, done by Haley Sharpe Design, focused on a clean, modern, and open feel.

The gallery also houses an amazing collection of seals and clay tablets, which needed to lit from specific directions in order for the impressions to be legible.

Here is a cuneiform tablet grazed with light from the upper left hand corner to ensure the impressions, made with a tool held in the right hand, are legible. |

All's Well That's Lit Well!
Last week, we had the opportunity to visit the lighting design students at Rhode Island College. We discussed the similarities between lighting design for theatre and lighting design for architecture. The students were excited to learn that a background in theatrical training can be so useful even outside the theatre! Not just in terms of technological “know how” but also in terms of the collaborative team process that’s necessary for the success of large projects in any occupation.

This shot was taken on site at one of our recent projects...
any guesses on where we were??
any guesses on where we were??
The correct answer is the cupola level of the Rhode Island State House!
Working with the wonderful team from Creative Environment, ALD recently completed install and focus on a new lighting system for the State House exterior. Up next: programming the system so that the colors can artfully reflect holidays and current events. Next time you're driving through Providence, look up and see what colors are being used!
